THE NORTHERN BALLET THEATRE and ORCHESTRA Artistic Director - David Nixon
Mozart’s last completed opera, The Magic Flute is a colourful fairytale portrayed with excellence by Glyndebourne on Tour Orchestra and Chorus. |
Having ‘charmed audiences and critics alike when premièred in 2007’ it was hardly likely that we would find this classical ballet by the Northern Ballet Theatre anything but beautiful and thoroughly enjoyable.
From the beginning we were drawn in by magical scenery and story telling. The scene is set for a traditional family Christmas Eve celebration, sometime in the 1800’s. Clara, the Edwards’ younger daughter, is caught up in the excitement of the family’s party and the magical entertainment a distant ‘uncle’ brings. The focus is on a strange wooden soldier that becomes even more fascinating when its ability to crack nuts is revealed. At the end of the evening when the family have retired to bed it is only Drosselmeyer, the uncle, who remains behind to cast his magic upon the Nutcracker doll before hiding it in a cupboard. What happens next is a magical journey for Clara as she is led by the Nutcracker doll who transforms into a handsome prince, defeats the wicked mouse King and then takes Clara into the enchanting, wintery world of dancing snow maidens!
The second act is set around a magnificent pavilion where Clara meets the beautiful sugar plum fairy and her cavalier (for us, the outstanding dancers of the performance!). Everyone wishes to dance for Clara when they hear of her victory over the wicked mouse King; Arabian princesses, Russian Cossacks, and French ballet dancers bring a feast of colour, vibrancy and magical choreography!
The story comes to an end as Clara wakes and finds herself in the arms of her father unsure of whether it has been real or just a dream ….
If you want to be taken back into childhood with all the anticipation of Christmas, a sense of family and fun then MK Theatre have timed this production well...we were definitely feeling very Christmassy by the end of the evening.
