The Grand Union Canal was built in the early 19th century for transport of goods i.e. coal up and down from London to Birmingham. The Grand Union Canal enters Milton Keynes in the Ouse Valley Park at Old Wolverton and snakes in a dramatic arc right through the east of the city until it leaves the city at Water Eaton in Bletchley. It provides a direct link with the area's industrial past - but also a wealth of leisure opportunities for today's residents. Among the best must be the canal broadwalk, managed by The Parks Trust, which allows you to walk, jog or cycle from historic Linford Manor Park through to Woughton on the Green, on good paths but within sight of the water and its colourful traffic of narrowboats. All along the canal is a tow path. Anyone can enjoy it at there own leisure, go down to the canal and walk along the tow path, in Milton Keynes there are typically additional paths along side. There is a walkers towpath route and for more information about canal boats, the scenery and the wildlife please contact the British Waterways Board on 01442 825938. |
